If you have a pelvic condition or pain that impacts your quality of life, consider Women's pelvic health physical therapy

Many women suffer in silence everyday from pain and disorders that originate from the pelvic floor area of the body. At least 1/3 of ALL women (50% of women over age 55) will experience a pelvic floor condition in their lifetime; the young female athlete, the pregnant and postpartum woman, the menopausal and elderly woman. But often, women do not seek medical attention for these conditions, primarily because of its sensitive nature. Fortunately, studies show that there is great benefit from pelvic health physical therapy intervention!

Who are Pelvic Health Physical Therapists?

Women's pelvic health physical therapy is an area of physical therapy that specializes in the unique needs of women throughout their lives. We are a small group of highly trained specialists in physical therapy that complete post graduate education and ongoing education. This allows us to thoroughly evaluate, treat and manage pelvic floor dysfunctions that involve the muscle, nerves and fascial tissues and their connections with the bladder, bowel and core functions. A women's pelvic health physical therapist is an integral member of the treatment team.

What Do We Treat?

  • Postpartum muscle and skeletal dysfunctions
  • Abdominal and pelvic scar management
  • Rectus diastasis (separation of the abdominal muscles)
  • Urinary and fecal incontinence (leakage of urine and bowel)
  • Interstitial cystitis (frequent and painful urination)
  • Cystocele, rectocele, uterine prolapse (pelvic organ prolapse)
  • Dyspareunia (painful sexual intercourse)
  • Coccydynia (tailbone pain)

How Can a Physical Therapist Help?

Pelvic floor physical therapy is a gentle non surgical approach to evaluate and treat common pelvic floor problems. This begins with a thorough evaluation and educational discussion and then implementation of an individual treatment plan. Treatment plans may include pelvic floor exercises - strengthening and stretching, bowel and bladder training, biofeedback, and muscle and fascia tissue mobilization. It is also common to find adjacent areas of the body that are contributing factors to the dysfunction that will be addressed in the treatment sessions.

Is Physical Therapy Right for You?

If you answer "yes" to any of the following questions, women's pelvic health physical therapy may be the right choice for you.

  • Are you having trouble returning to daily activity or sport after giving birth?
  • Do you leak urine when you laugh or sneeze?
  • Do you use the toilet more than every two to five hours a day?
  • Do you experience bowel leakage?
  • Do you have pain with sexual intercourse?
  • Do you have a feeling of pelvic heaviness or a feeling of "falling out?"
